OpenAI DevDay 2026: GPT-6.1 Sol, the Agents API and Dots
The key OpenAI DevDay 2026 news: the GPT-6.1 Sol model, the Agents API with computer use, Codex in the cloud and Dots, which is not coming to the EU.
Key points
- GPT-6.1 Sol improves at coding and computer use, and costs a fifth of GPT-6 Astra.
- The Agents API enters public beta, with hosted execution, memory and computer use.
- Codex can keep working in the cloud with your laptop closed.
- Dots, its persistent agents, are not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK.
OpenAI held its annual developer conference, DevDay 2026, on 29 September. There were dozens of announcements, but nearly all point the same way: AI stops being a chat you ask questions and becomes an agent that works on its own, in the background, with your tools.
GPT-6.1 Sol: close to the big model at a fifth of the price
The new model is GPT-6.1 Sol, an update to GPT-6 Sol focused on coding, operating a computer and professional tasks. OpenAI says it approaches GPT-6 Astra, its most capable model, on several evaluations, at one fifth of the token price: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output, against Astra’s $10 and $50. It is available in the API, ChatGPT Work and Codex.
Agents that work on their own
- Agents API (public beta). An API for building agents with execution hosted by OpenAI, memory, tools and multiple coordinated agents. It includes computer use: the agent can operate software through its interface, the way a person would with mouse and keyboard.
- Decisions API (limited preview). Uses the Luna model to pick from predefined answers: classify a request, route it or choose an agent’s next step. It is cheaper and faster than generating free text.
- Codex in the cloud. Coding tasks keep running when you close your laptop, and you can check on them from another device. The command line adds voice and an
/agentsview.
Plugins and MCP
ChatGPT plugins gain sidebars, interactive panels and file viewers. And with MCP Events, a connected app can notify ChatGPT that something happened and start an automation, instead of waiting for the user to ask. It is an extension on top of the Model Context Protocol, the standard already used by Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT itself.
Dots, but not in Europe
Dots are persistent agents with connected apps and their own cloud computer, meant for ongoing work. They are in beta on the Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, but not in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK.
What changes for you
- If you code against the API, try GPT-6.1 Sol before paying for Astra: it is five times cheaper if the quality is enough.
- If you build agents, the Agents API saves you from building the loop, memory and execution yourself. It is in beta, so expect changes.
- If you use ChatGPT in Europe, many new features will arrive later or not at all. Check availability in your country before changing plans.
