Meta Launches Muse, a Personal Agent That Runs Errands for You

Muse, Meta's agent, works in the background: it writes emails, books trips and makes purchases, also from WhatsApp. How it works and where it is available.

Key points

  • Muse, unveiled on 8 September, is an agent that carries out long tasks for you instead of just answering.
  • It runs on Muse Spark, Meta's most capable model, and works on the web, iOS, Android and WhatsApp.
  • A second agent, Sentinel, checks everything Muse wants to send to the internet before it leaves.
  • For now it is only available in the United States.

  • Paid plan prices: Meta only says it is free “for most of what people need” with subscriptions on top; the $20 and $100 a month figures going around are not in the official announcement.

On 8 September Meta unveiled Muse, which it calls “the world’s first personal AI agent built for everyone”. The difference from Meta AI, its chatbot, is the difference between a chatbot and an agent: Muse does not just answer, it does the work and comes back when it needs you to decide something.

What it can do

Meta gives everyday examples: writing and sending emails, booking a trip, trying to lower a bill, filling in forms, turning a recipe video into a shopping list, sending party invitations or making a purchase. Long tasks keep running in the background, and Muse learns your preferences from your conversations.

You can use it on the web, in iOS and Android apps and by messaging it on WhatsApp. Meta says it is also coming to its AI glasses. Underneath it runs Muse Spark, which Meta describes as its most capable model, built for agentic work.

The security side

An agent that can buy and write on your behalf is an attractive target for prompt injection. Meta’s answer is Sentinel, a second agent that runs on the same machine but is kept apart from Muse at the system level: nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless Sentinel approves it. Muse also cannot see your passwords (they are stored encrypted), every action is logged, and you choose which apps it connects to and with what permissions.

For businesses too

On 29 September, according to CNBC, Meta extended the service with Muse for Small Business, which connects the agent to tools such as Asana, Zoom, Intuit, Box, Canva and Slack.

What changes for you

Muse is only available in the United States for now, and Meta has not given a date for other regions. If you build software, you can try the model: Muse Spark is on Meta’s API at $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 output, and it is in our model comparison.
