ChatGPT for Teens Adds Flashcards, Quizzes and a College Planner

OpenAI adds flashcards and quizzes built from your notes to ChatGPT for Teens, and prepares College Planner for US college applications.

Key points

  • ChatGPT for Teens is the default experience for accounts identified as under 18.
  • It creates flashcards and interactive quizzes from your notes or a topic.
  • You can photograph several pages of notes and combine them into one PDF (iOS for now).
  • College Planner, for organising college applications, will launch in the US only at first.

On 7 October OpenAI announced new study features in ChatGPT for Teens, the version of ChatGPT that is on by default for accounts it identifies as under 18. Some are useful for any student; one is US-only for now.

For studying

  • Flashcards. Give it your notes or a topic and ChatGPT builds a deck. You can mark the cards you know, go back to the ones you miss and shuffle. They are saved in your library, and you can schedule a task to practise them regularly.
  • Quizzes. Upload your notes and turn them into an interactive quiz. ChatGPT is now better at recognising when you want a quiz and builds it right in the chat.
  • Multi-page photos. Photograph several pages of notes in a row and ChatGPT combines them into a single PDF. It is on iOS; for Android OpenAI is “working to bring it”.

OpenAI has not given a specific date for each feature.

College Planner (US only)

It brings together the requirements, deadlines, tasks and financial-aid steps for the colleges on your list in one plan, with a timeline and progress tracking. The first version is for US high-school students in grades 10–12 heading to a four-year college. OpenAI says it will reach more countries and types of study later, with no date.

How much teens use it

OpenAI shares some figures: teens use ChatGPT for under 15 minutes a day on average, and fewer than 2% spend more than three hours in a row. About half of the conversations that show a break reminder end within five minutes. It is also funding a three-year digital wellness programme at Boston Children’s Hospital.

What it means for you

  • If you are studying, flashcards and quizzes are among the most effective ways to revise: they make you recall, not just reread. You can ask the regular ChatGPT or other assistants for them too.
  • If you are a parent or teacher, the teen version reminds users to take breaks, but it does not replace an adult’s guidance.
  • If you want to get more out of it, our first steps with an AI chat explains how to ask.
